StraightTalk, StraightAnswers Episode 3: Dive into Practical Steps for Success for Veteran-owned small businesses in the federal procurement marketplace.

In this episode of StraightTalk, StraightAnswers, VA OSDBU Executive Director Ms. Chanel Bankston-Carter led a dynamic discussion with Barbara Ashe, National Director of the Veteran Institute for Procurement (VIP), and successful Veteran business owners JR Robinson and Kathleen Ford, who are graduates of the VIP Training Program. The episode focuses on guiding Veteran-owned small businesses through the complexities of federal procurement and contracting.

Established in 2009, the Veteran Institute for Procurement utilizes an in-person, expert-led training model to equip Veterans with the knowledge and skills to excel in federal contracting. Barbara Ashe emphasized that strategic planning, a clear understanding of business capabilities, and a steadfast commitment to delivering high-quality performance are crucial to winning and keeping federal contracts.

The panelists cautioned against common pitfalls, such as making premature large infrastructure investments. Instead, they urged Veteran entrepreneurs to build strong relationships with contracting officers, leverage teaming opportunities, and only scale operations as contracts and opportunities arise.

Looking ahead to fiscal years 2026 to 2028, the discussion underscored the importance of embracing efficiency, adapting to technological advancements, and maintaining strict compliance with federal requirements. Panelists advised Veteran business owners to plan strategically for the next three to five years and to take advantage of resources like the VIP Training Program.
